Why Europe Hates US Internet Giants In Six Charts
This article is a nice overview of how broad U.S. internet giants extend into Europe. Well worth the read. The key points that stand out:
1. U.S. internet companies are dominating Europe. Or at least in France which is what this article notes.
2. There are exceptions, e.g. LeBonCoin is owned by a Norwegian company.
The article calls out two correlated functions: first, the amount of VC funding in the US is 5x that of Europe. Second, the spending on secondary education in the U.S. is much higher.
What that misses is *why* VC funding is so much lower given roughly equivalent GDP. Is it taxes? No structure for stock/stock options?
